Game 2 and stuff.

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

After starting out the 2nd half with a real downer game yesterday, the Pirates came back tonight and kicked some series Ass-tro. Ohlendorf sucked the big one tonight, which was very disappointing for me. I wanted to see him go for a while tonight and notch the W. Instead, he was out and Carrasco was in after less than 2 innings. He did a pretty good job for a few innings but got in a jam later on. Then came Lopez who coughed up the lead. It looked pretty grim going to the bottom of the 5th.

Then the Pirates bats came alive for seven runs the last four innings. It was amazing. It seemed like whenever they got a hit suddenly another guy would be getting a hit. Meanwhile, the four pitchers that ended the game the last four innings (Donnelly, Meek, Hanrahan and Dotel) kept the Astros quiet. In fact, I took a look at the line-up in the 7th when Meek was on the mound and wondered if Bourn would be the last out because that would mean that Meek, Hanrahan and Dotel pitched a perfect 3 innings. Turns out it went just like that. Those three guys are like going to the bank. They always have da good stuff. And Lopez, who gave up the lead in the 5th got the W. Wins and Losses are not a real stat! Just like RBI!

Then came the awesomest fireworks show I ever saw. It really put the Dubuque and Cascade ones to shame with the sheer awesomeness of it all. I always sort of wondered why people would bother with Fireworks shows because the ones where I live just aren’t that impressive. But these ones certainly proved to be otherwise.

Before the game there was the meeting of a gang of guys from the BucsDugout website and hanging around with them. There were also people there from a Pittsburgh message board site called “Pittsburgh Sports Tavern”. Much like high school, the two websites later on sort of divided off in the two cliques. Since the two websites have different formats, it kind of made sense.

Another cool thing is that the Stats Geek guy from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette must have got wind about the gathering and came over and talked to us for a while. He was a very cool guy. He told me about the book he wrote and I told him about the farm and Iowa and he explained why the drinking laws in Pennsylvania were so insanely prohibitionist.

Everyone was very impressed that I came here all the way from Iowa, as though that was some sort of huge achievement. The next furthest away guy came from Chicago.

The most exciting part was meeting WTM, a guy who is basically a guru-know it all when it comes to minor league players. I was shocked by his age, because I thought he’d be a younger guy about my age and he turned out to be a lot older than that, probably about my father’s age. The only disappointment was not having the BucsDugout “editor in-chief” Charlie there. Charlie is a Pittsburgh guy who now lives in San Diego, so that would be a huge trip for him to make and he was just in da Burgh a few weeks ago. But for most everyone else, it was nice to put names on the blog to faces.

One guy, CaptainAwesome kept calling me Cave Man. It came from the fact that my screen name is IAPiratesFan. I thought it seemed pretty obvious that it meant Iowa Pirates Fan. He thought it was some sort of cave man talk “I a Pirates fan!” because he couldn’t fathom someone from Iowa being a Pirates fan.

Oh, something stupid at this hotel. It doesn’t have ice machines in the hallways. Instead, the brilliant guys who run this place have fridges in the rooms that produce ice. But if you want a lot of ice, you have to turn it on several hours before you can get any ice. Stupid! People need lots of ice for their coolers if they’re driving a lot. But otherwsie, great hotel. Lots of nice parking and nice rooms and uh, yeah. Cool.

So tomorrow afternoon is game 3. If it’s turning in to a huge blow out by the Astros (which seems possible since it’s Maholm vs. Oswalt) I might duck out a bit early and start to head on home. Otherwise by this time tomorrow night I’ll be somewhere in Indiana or Ohio.

Stuff I did today.

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Early on this afternoon, I quit fucking around on the internet and went in to the mighty city to buy groceries and get my sister a little something for her birthday. I came back and decided I would go to the USA Furniture store not to far from here and check out the rocking recliners.

I went back after I dropped off the groceries because I was worried about them possibly going bad in the car and found a chair I liked. I asked my mom and she came with me. It was kind of funny because when we walked in, the sales guy asked if my mom was Linda. Linda is my aunt, her sister and it turns out the sales guy went to elementary school with my mom, aunts and uncles.

So after test sitting a few chairs, I found one I liked, but kept checking out more to see if there were any others that I would like more. There was a really nice one, but it was over $100 more than the first one I liked. The guy had me check out the wall recliner, but that one kind of sucked. He said they only keep two in stock because people rarely buy them anymore.

So he and I walked up to the place where you pay for it and my mom was saying that I should just use my debit card and the guy said “We don’t do plastic anymore.” He said they did plastic for a while, but with the merchant fees being getting pretty ridiculous, they were losing a lot of money on the cards. So now they only do checks and cash, which is how it used to be done back in the old days at most stores. They were able to lower their prices a little by going back to cash and checks only. I went and got my checkbook before I went to the furniture store so it wasn’t a problem for me. So yeah, much cooler than the local electronics store that has an 18% annual percentage rate for overdue accounts.

The boss is making me work late.

I hate when the Pirates announcers make predictions like “All signs point to a W.” Nothing like an announcer to jinx the team he works for. Also what’s with all this stuff with the Pirates playing well the last two games and this one? It does not make sense. I mean, they go back and forth between brilliant and playing like shit. And it seems like the shit last longer than the good times. Oh well.

Also it would appear that the Steinbrenners bitched loud enough to get MLB to make the DH mandatory for every All-Star Game. Can’t let those pitchers go up and hit. I mean, they might hurt themselves on the basepaths. Ya know, unlike the majority of NL pitchers who go up and hit.

I just saw a beer commercial where two girls are playing “Spin the Bottle” with each other. I wanna play it with them. I should work on setting that up. Spin the Bottle should always have two girls and a guy. And that guy should always be me.

I heard today on Free Talk Live podcast from last week that the Judge, Andrew Napolitano is getting his own show on Fox Business Channel. It’s like they’re putting all the smart people on that channel (Napolitano, John Stossel, and Dave Ramsey) and then leaving the crazies on Fox News Channel (O’Reilly, Hannity, Beck). But how to explain why Shepherd Smith is still on Fox News?

Colon Flow.

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

I just saw a commercial for something called Colon Flow. Basically it seemed pretty normal (shit more and feel bettter!) Then it got out a graph showing that if you only shit once a day, you might retain 4.5 lbs of fecal weight. Then if it’s every two days, you might hold up to 9 lbs and every three days 13.5 lbs of shit. Well, generally speaking I go about once a day. Is that abnormal? I didn’t realize that people are shitting several times a day. What the hell?

Then they say that the general public in my area will be allowed to test it. Huh, how nice of them. What is my area exactly? I mean, this isn’t on a local channel. It’s on a national TV channel on my satellite dish. So can I assume when they say “area” they mean “the entire United States area”?

Oh well, I just thought it was a funny commercial. But certainly not worth my several minutes of writing about, so…yeah.

November Reign.

I’m watching Monday Night Football. The announcers keep making a point of saying the punter’s age. Ok, I get it, he’s over 40. How many times do we need to know that the guy is old? I mean, kickers aren’t football players. They’re kickers. The Titans just ran an option play like we had in high school. Fun memories.

I went to get the chocolate pie from the Bishop Buffet for Thanksgiving. I’m also making a pumpkin pie. The total price was $8.01 and they didn’t even have one of those penny trays. So I got 99 cents back. Before entering the mall, I emptied out 38 cents from my pocket and threw it in the Salvation Army bucket. I had pennies, but gave them away. I make stupid decisions some times.

I went to the dentist today. I thought for sure that it was 1:30 or 1:45 appointment. Turns out that it was a 1:00 appointment. They always send me a card a few weeks beforehand with the time on it. I just put it aside and throw it away when the appointment is over. This time, I actually used it. I also forgot to put it in my new cellphone. But the next two are ready to remind me when the time comes.

For now, I’ll just fall asleep with the game on.

7 Years….really.

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Exactly 7 years ago today, I published the first entry on the old version of this blog. Um, let’s see. Something profound. I got nothing. Other than I think rarely in human history has someone written so much that’s been read by so few and yet the author remains completely full of himself and full of shit. So there. Profound. I think.

Also in my laziness and my appreciation for the scheduling feature on this fancy new blog I added last winter, I wrote this Saturday night. Um, yeah, Wednesday night, we’re probably busy right now with the beans or getting the corn started. Well, not this late at night. I’m probably half asleep and I don’t think I could write anything coherent after all that work I probably did today.

Since I started the Pirates have been 478-654. The Steelers have won two Super Bowls. The Penguins won the Stanley Cup once and lost it. The Chicago Bulls finally returned to the playoffs for the first time since the Jordan era and they luckily got the first pick in the draft. The Iowa Hawkeyes have started this year 9-0, although their basketball team still sucks.

I’ve had a girlfriend or two or three or something. I’ve been dumped once. I’ve had one of those there mutual break ups. And I got just completely ignored. I guess she’s with someone else now. I don’t know.

Of course if you really want to, you could start counting from March 15, 2001. That’s when I started saving all those things I wrote. For about a year before that I wrote something and then deleted it when I wrote something new. So the 9 year anniversary is a few months away, but I don’t count those really old ones. It’s like counting abbreviations in scrabble.

UPDATE: 11:05 PM: I actually was sleeping when this went up. I guess I was tired. Also on my twitter account, I almost correctly predicted the score, but had it backwards on who would win. Fuck.

World Series thoughts.

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

First of all, Phillies in 7. Game 7 ends with A-Rod hitting it to the fence with bases loaded, but is caught by Shane Victorino to end it.

Secondly, Bucco Fans has written an interesting article about how teams like the Pirates don’t really have a good chance to win or even play in the World Series. A lot of small market teams say they like what Oakland and Minnesota have done, but they haven’t been to the World Series since the early 90′s. Tampa Bay went to the fall classic last year when the Yankees had an off year. And Florida won one, but then traded away most of the team within a few years because they couldn’t afford the guys as they got older.

The real issue for future Pirates teams won’t be so much buying free agents as much as it will be keeping the team together if they’re a good or great team. Will the Pirates be able to keep McCutchen, Alvarez and Milledge or will they be gone as soon as they can leave through free agency or in tades? Unless the Pirates become a lot more popular team and start selling out every game at PNC Park, if the Pirates are successful, we’re going to see a few successful years with a few years of rebuilding bookending it.

Bud Selig talking about parity in baseball is absurd. The Yankees haven’t had a losing season since 1992. The Braves won 14 straight division titles. The Pirates have had 17 straight losing season. The Orioles have 12, the Reds have 9. The Royals have 14 of 15. The Nationals have lost 100+ games each of the last two years. You never see that kind of thing in the NFL or NBA or NHL. Those teams have taken steps to make every team a contender. Meanwhile, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and other rich teams are doing their best to stop true economic parity in Major League Baseball.

Angels and the end times.

The great thing about Free Talk Live is that anyone can call up and talk about anything they want. I downloaded the radio show podcast from last night and they were talking about war and the continuing pointless warmongering in Afghanistan and all that. Then about 2/3 of the way through the show, this guy called up and claimed to be from another planet and that he knows who god really is and all that, but he’s not an alien, he’s an angel. Also the bible is bullshit and so are all religions on earth. Apparently, God will take away 144,000 people in the next couple years and then let the rest of the world do something? It was great because the guy was on the show for probably almost an hour. It was pretty awesome. I’ll have to find something to call up and talk to them about.

Ass Booting.

Monday, August 10th, 2009

It flooded here yesterday. A lot, I mean it rained a ton. Basically, the house is fine, but it did flood around the barn and it was just an amazing amount of rain. Also it was so windy that it knocked a huge tree over and a few other branches fell off other trees. And the wind and rain was so bad that we were standing at the window and couldn’t see the barn from the house.

I bought new boots today. I went to the store and there were three kinds of boots there. A generic kind that didn’t have any sort of brand name on them. There was Northern boots and Servus boots. The Northern were more expensive and the Servus boots were cheaper. But, the Northern had no steal toe. The Servus ones did. The odd thing was that Northern wanted $24. Servus were $16. Why spend more on something that doesn’t have a steal toe and usually wears out after a year. Of course, I don’t know how long Servus boots last.

So I was reading the monthly Q&A with Frank Coonelly. They clearly screen the questions because if they didn’t, most of them would be “When are you going to stop destroying the Pirates?” or “Fuck you, asshole?” But ya know, they were already caught stuffing the ballot box in the 2006 All-Star Game and now the front office is submitting softball questions for the Pirates.com Q&A session:

First I would like to say I think you and Neal and everyone else did a fantastic job this year acquiring talent and fully understand your plan…

Wow. Really? I mean, if it’s not submitted by the front office, I just wonder they also believe everything everyone else has told them?

Oh well. I mean, I don’t think they’re doing a terrible job, I think they’re doing ok. But it’s going to take 3 or 4 seasons to find out how these trades are going to work out for the Pirates and how the draft picks work out. They’ve certainly done more to build up the minor leagues and put players in place to help them win in the years to come than the previous three GMs did.

No room for your stuff!

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

I spent several hours cleaning the garage this afternoon. It was a hot and sweaty job, but the garage looks a little better. The garage has sort of become an extension of the house. As soon as you fill up the house with your stuff, you have to put some of your stuff in the garage and then some more stuff in the garden shed. Overall, there’s way too much stuff around here.

In other news, Ian Snell asked to be sent to AAA Indianapolis. He’s gone from being one of the best young pitchers in baseball to a walking caricature. He’s essentially trying to get traded away from Pittsburgh, but at this point, the Pirates will be lucky to get anything for him.

The weather was weird today, there was this big storm north of us and it broke up and went around us and then when it was south of us, the storm got back together. It was very odd that the storm seemed to avoid hitting us at all.
