Jerry in da Burgh!

It’s so much fun being in Pittsburgh. Driving in city streets are scary and weird and stuff. And driving here was the most boring 12 hours ever. I listened to about 6 episodes of Free Talk Live on the way here. By about 10 hours in, I was listening but not paying much attention. They were just talking about the same things over and over again. Like how much can you really listen to the same conversations about privatizing the post office or roads or how L. Neil Smith is kind of a jack ass or how Ian is a bit condescending towards people. I tried listening to the Sunday Internet only show and I got bored with it. FTl is all about Ian and Mark. They are Free Talk Live.

As for my car, all the highway miles made my car very fuel efficient. My car got about 36 MPG the last two fill ups. Most of the time it gets between 27 and 32. In an effort to defeat boredom, I kept checking it while driving. With a 11 gallon tank, I would be impressed when I got to the half way point and I had driven about 190 or 200 miles because usually it’ll be about 150 or 160 miles.

Also, one of my comments on YouTube is a top rated comment on the video of “Nuking the Fridge”. Check it out.

I just noticed this, but Futurama is a lot funnier when you have a bit to drink.

Shaving stuff.

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Just a few days ago, I decided to change my shaver back from electric to regular plain old disposable shaver/cream. I got a Sensor Excel, somehow, in 1998. I think Gillete might have sent it to me. They still make the blades so I was able to get a five pack at Wal-Mart. I really don’t bother with upgrading to the latest and greatest model that the shaving companies have come up with. Sure maybe a young man today who’s just reaching the age in which he needs to shave might want to get the latest and greatest in order to insure the longevity of the holder part that stays around forever.

So no sooner do I do that than this article appears. Just get something easy to use that you can replace the blades when they go dull. In other words, just use common sense.

I better get to bed. Got a long drive tomorrow. To Pittsburgh.

Stuff I did today.

Early on this afternoon, I quit fucking around on the internet and went in to the mighty city to buy groceries and get my sister a little something for her birthday. I came back and decided I would go to the USA Furniture store not to far from here and check out the rocking recliners.

I went back after I dropped off the groceries because I was worried about them possibly going bad in the car and found a chair I liked. I asked my mom and she came with me. It was kind of funny because when we walked in, the sales guy asked if my mom was Linda. Linda is my aunt, her sister and it turns out the sales guy went to elementary school with my mom, aunts and uncles.

So after test sitting a few chairs, I found one I liked, but kept checking out more to see if there were any others that I would like more. There was a really nice one, but it was over $100 more than the first one I liked. The guy had me check out the wall recliner, but that one kind of sucked. He said they only keep two in stock because people rarely buy them anymore.

So he and I walked up to the place where you pay for it and my mom was saying that I should just use my debit card and the guy said “We don’t do plastic anymore.” He said they did plastic for a while, but with the merchant fees being getting pretty ridiculous, they were losing a lot of money on the cards. So now they only do checks and cash, which is how it used to be done back in the old days at most stores. They were able to lower their prices a little by going back to cash and checks only. I went and got my checkbook before I went to the furniture store so it wasn’t a problem for me. So yeah, much cooler than the local electronics store that has an 18% annual percentage rate for overdue accounts.

Sleep.

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Tonight I saw the Parks and Recreation episode called Telethon. In it the main character falls asleep for 22 straight hours after being up for two straight days.

That reminded me of being in Europe. Towards the end of the four weeks we were there, I was just becoming exhausted. For the first three weeks, we were usually going to bed around midnight or 1:00 in the morning and then waking up at 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning. We would shower, eat breakfast, pack up our stuff and get in the tour bus. And we would go see stuff that day. We’d get to the Hostel at 6:00 or 7:00 at night. We would then do what we wanted until midnight or so. Going to sleep before that was useless as the loudest kids wouldn’t let people sleep until about midnight or 1:00 in the morning.

We then stayed with assigned families for a week after the first three weeks were over. And during this time, we had to go to school. Even though, I had just graduated from high school. The first two nights with the families, we went out and did stuff, mostly just hang out with the other kids I went to Europe with. The third day after school, the mom wanted me to go see this older town with lots of neat stuff. After several hours there, we got back to the house and I fell asleep at around 6:00 in the evening. I did not wake up once to go to the bathroom or get something to eat. I woke up and it was still bright out. I looked at the clock and it said it was 6:00. The kid said it was time to get up and go to school. I then realized I was asleep for 12 hours.

Another guy on the tour asked what I did the night before and I just said “Sleep”. It was probably the awesomest sleep I ever got. And it really helped me get through the last four or five days before I was back in the good ol’ US of A. The only thing that came close to it was the night of August 5, 2005, asleep at 9 woke up at 6. But that was because I couldn’t sleep the night before.

So that’s my sleep story.

The Pirates were sleeping tonight. They only got one god damn hit in the game. Charlie Morton continued to not suck as he went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs, although I heard he didn’t have his best stuff.14-18 now. It’s just not turning out to be a great season, but knowledgeable Pirates fan knew that the 2010 season would probably suck back in 2007.

Got no future, great big past.

My elementary school had an open house today to celebrate 50 years and stuff. My parents said I should go, so I went. Basically it’s pretty much the same school it was in 1992 with a whole lot more added to it. Honestly, it’s hard to remember a lot about it. Some of the rooms looked familiar, but there was a whole lot there that didn’t look familiar.

In the new gym (I don’t know what was wrong with the old gym, it seemed adequate when I was there) they had all sorts of stuff in there, including my 4th grade teachers plate collection. She had her class sign a plate every year. I saw the class I was in and there was my “signature”. I had the worst hand writing in the class, although one kid’s was almost as bad as mine. And the really sad thing is that my hand writing isn’t any better today, except that my signature today is in cursive….sorta.

Teh twitterz.

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Someone who posted on Twitter mentioned that it’s sad that Justin Bieber is still so high up on the Twitter trending list. I never even heard of Justin Bieber until that guy mentioned it on Twitter. The picture of him on Wikipedia makes him look like some pretty boy, ya know, like me when I was 16 years old. :-D

So anyways, I sort of skimmed through his wikipedia entry and there’s a section called “Early Life and Career Beginnings”. He’s fucking 16 years old. He’s still in his “early life”. If he was my age, I could see having an early life section, maybe.

Speaking of age, I just remembered that I turned 30 about a month ago. Ya know, I don’t even care anymore that I’m this age. Back a decade ago, it was fun getting to do more stuff as I got older. I turned 18 and I could smoke (if I actually wanted to). I turned 21 and I could drink (legally). I turned 25 and I could rent a car (still yet to do it). But now I turned 30 and all I could think was “That’s nice.” I don’t mind getting older, it’s a good thing. I mean, the older you are it means that you get to live longer. If you die at age 25, there’s all sorts of stuff you will miss even though people will remember you as a young skinny guy with a full head of hair or a young girl without stretch marks and sagging boobs.

I suppose what I’m saying is that age for me right now is just a number, it really doesn’t mean anything more. I suppose I might start caring again if I make it to 70 or 80…

Weekend Stuff.

Monday, February 8th, 2010

On Friday I drove to St. Louis to hang out with Jennie and John for the weekend. We went out and had crab at a Crabshack place. It was good, but I wouldn’t have it more than once a year or so. We then watched The Hangover, which was funny, but not for everyone. The Mike Tyson cameo was the best part.

On Saturday night we went to the Blues game against the Blackhawks. The Blues got totally screwed by a stupid ref who couldn’t see the puck and that cost the Blues a goal. So instead of regulation ending with a tie, the Blackhawks went home with a 2-1 win. We also went to the Hardrock Cafe, which is tasty.

On Sunday we had the Super Bowl party. It was hard to care too much about the game since I honestly didn’t care much about who won. I’m glad the Saints won since they never won it all before and all that. But I would have been glad if the Colts and Peyton Manning had won it too. He’s a very cool guy. During the party a 3 or 4 year old boy got really interested in World of Warcraft. So he asked what you could be. So I put my guy away and went along and showed him the “Create a new character” page and I showed him what he could be. I teased him a little saying he looked like a Gnome. His older brother told me to make a Tauren hunter. So I did. And they thought it was really cool he had a gun. But he kept pushing me to be a zombie (The Forsaken in the game). So I made up an Undead Warrior for him, he couldn’t be a Warlock or anything like that because those guys are wearing dresses and he said they couldn’t have hair because that’s girly too. So I started doing quests with the bald warrior when he said he wanted a guy with two daggers. So I quit on that guy and made an Undead Rogue for him and did a few quests. At that point, my laptop ran out of power and the football game was hitting the middle of the fourth quarter and I wanted to see what happened so I told him that’s it for today and he got up and did other stuff ’till his grandma wanted to leave. After everyone left, Jennie and John put on Family Guy and I fell asleep during it.

This morning I woke up and started reading through teh blogz and I looked outside and noticed it was snowing out. I thought I better get going. So I quickly packed up and left at about 6:45. It’s amazing how much worse the roads were in Missouri compared to Iowa. Missouri, the roads were about 1/2 covered in snow. In Iowa, crossed the border and the roads were all clear. Also in Southern Iowa, I noticed a giant billboard that had a green background and in white had the name Jesus. That Jesus guy sure is narcissistic for putting his name up on a billboard like that. Got back to Dubuque around 1:00 and had everything unpacked and put away by 2:00.

Now back to my regularly scheduled programming.

More Christmas stuff.

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

So on Friday we went to my grandparents place for Christmas lunch and stuff. It looked to me like all but five or six presents were for our grandparents. One was for me, one for Sean and two for Amos and maybe a few other people got stuff too. The great thing about what Sean and I got, it was both World of Warcraft stuff. I got the Burning Crusade expansion pack and I got him a playing time card.

But the one thing that stuck out in my mind was having a three and a half year old jump on my lap from a chair about two or three feet away. She didn’t say she was going to do it. She just did it and I was looking some where else when I look back over and see her in mid flight. I thought for sure that she’d hurt me. Turns out, everything was fine and I didn’t get hurt or anything. But it was a little scary.

Also, on Thursday night I was looking through the Dubuque Advertiser to see what the Church situation was and if I wanted to go or not. Turns out none of the times the Catholic churches had really fit with my schedule. I was either, working, at parties or sleeping. Meanwhile, I started looking through the other churches that aren’t Catholic. One of them had a 7:00 PM service on December 23. Now I like that church. They get it, I mean let’s move mass to when people would actually have time to show up. That’s something I could get behind there. No wonder most Churches are losing parishioners, they just aren’t any good at customer service.

Christmas: Chapter 30.

Friday, December 25th, 2009

So yet another Christmas is pretty much done for the year. Gonna go to Grandma’s tomorrow and then everything will be back to normal. And yet, I still haven’t watched Christmas Vacation this year. Thankfully, tonight I saw approximately 15 seconds of A Christmas Story which is exactly 13 seconds too much.

I basically got enough Steelers stuff as it is. I really don’t need anymore. But I did get a lamp and snuggie with Steelers on it. But my favorite this year is the Pirates blanket I got. So nice to get a Pirates thing instead of Steelers, which I have way too much of. I also got some iTunes and World of Warcraft gift cards, which everyone needs.

Speaking of the Pirates, Matt Capps, who the Pirates non-tendered, was signed by the Nationals. I almost get this feeling that the Nationals are striving to be MLB’s version of the Washington Redskins. A team with a bunch of stupid free agent signings that do nothing to put the team ahead. That being said, it was stupid to give up on Capps, Although he was expendable, I think it would have been smarter to keep him, give him a chance to improve and then trade him in July. If he doesn’t non-tender him next year instead.

Peak-a-boo.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Played some peakaboo tonight. That’s an easy game with no rules, but I think I could throw in some stats and make it thourghly boring and unfun for everyone.

Also in completely unrelated news, kind of. I hate getting older. I mean, why does my hip hurt? Why does it always hurt when I’m climbing in and out of the tractor all day? It never did this when I was a teenager. It fucking sucks. I get a feeling if I went out and played some high school football, I would end up in the emergency room whereas in high school I’d just walk it off.
